Oaxaca’s Artistic and Religious Heritage Shines Thanks to Iberdrola México

A global leader in the energy sector and firmly committed to guiding the planet toward sustainable energy efficiency, Iberdrola S.A. has launched a program to illuminate the architectural treasures of Oaxaca, Mexico. Theaters, museums, cathedrals, and iconic colonial-era churches will now shine under some of the world’s most advanced and efficient lighting systems. This multimillion-dollar donation reflects the company’s dedication to sustainability and its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“At Iberdrola México, our vital mission in every region where we operate is to bring light to people’s lives through clean, renewable energy—and, in doing so, to help make the planet a viable, non-polluting, and energy-efficient place,” stated representatives from the company.

“We contribute to a better world by doing what we know best. That’s why our company has donated a multimillion-dollar investment in equipment to deliver efficient lighting to Oaxaca’s architectural and religious heritage. This initiative also includes the work of our technicians and experts, who oversee installation and calibration of the lighting systems. We will make cathedrals, temples, and theaters shine with cutting-edge, artistic, and above all efficient lighting—without generating pollution. The result will be a significant reduction in the environmental footprint caused by nighttime illumination of these beloved treasures,” said Paola Castro, Iberdrola México’s Communications Director.

Illuminating Oaxaca’s Cultural Heart

The historic heritage found in Mexican cities is a living expression of their traditions and people. In the case of Oaxaca, its cultural richness leaves visitors deeply moved—or even enamored—by its baroque temples and colonial architecture. The city is globally renowned and admired for its exceptional artistic and architectural legacy, which makes it one of Latin America’s premier cultural and tourist destinations. Every year, thousands of travelers arrive eager to experience, admire, and photograph its historic monuments firsthand.

The Scope of Iberdrola México’s Program

To highlight the beauty and majestic presence of the buildings that comprise Oaxaca’s invaluable cultural heritage, Iberdrola México, in partnership with the Government of Oaxaca, launched the program “Oaxaca Brilla” (“Oaxaca Shines”). As its name suggests, the project’s mission is to illuminate historic landmarks across the state capital with innovative, efficient, and artistically designed lighting systems.

This ambitious and forward-thinking initiative will not only enhance Oaxaca’s tourism appeal but also play a crucial role in environmental sustainability. Thanks to the installation of ultra-efficient lighting technology, the carbon footprint resulting from illuminating these landmarks will be effectively reduced to zero.

To fulfill this commitment, the company will oversee the installation of lighting systems in ten major buildings, with a total investment estimated to exceed one million dollars. The project, carried out entirely as a corporate donation, will span approximately five years and contribute directly to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Enhancing Heritage Through Efficient Lighting

The lighting systems will employ state-of-the-art LED projectors, and both Iberdrola’s engineers and Oaxaca’s authorities emphasize that the installations will strictly respect the cultural and historical integrity of each monument. The key principle, they explain, lies in seamless integration—using non-invasive methods and carefully positioned light sources to preserve each building’s original character while ensuring long-term conservation.

A Collaborative Effort for Cultural Preservation

Iberdrola México will not work alone on this landmark project. The initiative is being carried out in close collaboration with the Government of Oaxaca, ensuring that all work is performed in a secure environment that safeguards the city’s heritage. It also enjoys the institutional support of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the Archdiocese of Oaxaca, and the Municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez.
