Every project begins with an intricate design process that involves a satellite mapping phase—an awe-inspiring and colossal task. Rogers’ technical team captures images from altitudes of up to 500 kilometers, providing the artist with his first impression of the future piece.
To ensure that every element is precisely placed, Rogers undertakes a long and demanding process. Thousands of satellite images must be studied in detail, each one helping him piece together his vision like a massive, three-dimensional puzzle. Throughout this process, creativity and intuition guide him, revealing where each component must go to achieve the desired effect. When he finally deems a work complete, new satellite images are taken—immortalizing his monumental sculptures and allowing them to be seen around the world.
Time as a Co-Creator of Art on an Impossible Scale
Time itself becomes a co-creator in Rogers’ environmental art. As the years pass, nature’s own forces gradually reclaim the sculptures, allowing each material element to reintegrate harmoniously with the landscape. One such enduring masterpiece is “Sacred”, created in Slovakia in 2008. On a vast plain near the medieval Spissky Castle, Rogers sculpted the abstract figure of a monumental horse using white travertine marble. Another striking example of his visionary approach is “Knot”, built in Pokhara, Nepal, entirely from the surrounding mountain terrain with the enthusiastic participation of local villagers.
