Thanks to a scholarship program for young people from vulnerable neighborhoods who excel academically but lack the means to access higher education, Africa can now dream of a different, more equitable, and prosperous future. The Christ the Teacher Institute for Education is the educational institution behind this remarkable initiative. Managed by the Lasallian Community, this successful system is based on granting full scholarships covering 100% of educational expenses.
“To the young people living on the streets who know how hard it is to find the opportunity for a dignified future—with education and work—I want to tell you that I understand you firsthand. In fact, I was once in that same place: lost, unsure of what to do, and with little hope. The key is not to get discouraged, not to give up, to stay close to good company—and if you have faith, to pray a lot. Soon the doors will open for you, just as God did for me; He will do the same for you.”
These simple yet profound words, spoken from the heart, are the testimony of Kenneth, one of the young beneficiaries—along with 39 others—of the scholarship program at the Christ the Teacher Institute for Education (CTIE) in Nairobi, Kenya. This program is vital for these youths, among the poorest of the poor in the world, living in Africa in the 21st century. It is a century marked by technological advances and artificial intelligence, yet for those who dream of progress—those who wear worn or mended clothes and shoes and face all kinds of hardships—these great innovations remain distant, with little impact on their daily lives.
Changing Reality Through Education
To transform this reality, the Lasallian Congregation has launched a scholarship system designed to be revolutionary. The goal is to provide 40 young people with full scholarships covering their entire academic journey, giving them access to high-quality tertiary education. It is a bright window opening toward the future, bringing light and hope to those who would otherwise have no means to shape their destiny.
With the Right Support, Anything Is Possible
Thanks to these scholarships—which promise to mark a before and after in the lives of vulnerable youth from the impoverished neighborhoods of Kibera—a horizon of opportunity is emerging: the chance, through effort, to achieve remarkable goals such as earning a degree, acquiring a skilled trade, and building a self-sufficient life.
The program led by the Lasallian community stands as a notable example of its commitment to quality, inclusive, and equitable education for all, everywhere. In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the La Salle Educational Network carries out a series of multidimensional programs aimed at promoting progress among the world’s most vulnerable populations.
Kenneth’s story is that of countless young people living in precarious conditions in countries left behind by history. Creating channels of solidarity through scholarships and other forms of financial support to advance education can enlighten minds, shape character, touch hearts, and completely transform lives—for the betterment of society as a whole.
The Story of a Simple Young Man Who Dared to Dream
“My name is Kenneth Ouma Muga. I’m in my first year of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, specializing in Geography and Religious Studies. I really enjoy supporting and assisting others in any way I can. I love sharing with people and helping them whenever possible. That’s what I’ll continue to do once I earn my degree in Education. I believe that within education lies the key to our dreams—to discovering what we’re good at and realizing everything we can achieve if we try. With effort, discipline, and commitment, we can reach our goals in life,” said Kenneth, his eyes filled with hope and determination.
